Note that in some countries (e.g. the UK) a birth certificate may be issued which does not show the child's name.

Christian name, surname or whole name? I am a bit surprised. What is the point of a birth certificate if these details aren't given?

In some countries (e.g. the UK) the only name that is obligatory on a birth certificate is that of the mother (mother's name and surname at birth); the father's name may be with-held (if paternity is contested) or may not even be known. The birth certificate exists to attest to the child's date of coming into existence, with at least the minimum additional information to 'identify' the child - in some countries a new-born child gets an ID number long before being formally named. Also the child's name may not be given, for example, in the case of a still-birth (in which case a birth and death certificate are issued concurrently, with no mention of the child's name). I believe that it is obligatory (in most countries) to indicate the child's sex - but this is not mentioned in the COD definition shown hereabove.

Another point - bearing in mind this is an international multi-cultural dico. is that I would prefer to see 'Christian name' replaced by the more general 'first or given name(s)'.

I had no idea that birth certificates were so complicated.
Mine definitely had my name in it.
The idea of being a number before having a name is quite disturbing (sounds big brotherish).

No offense was meant by "Christian name"!

I've never seen an Irish birth certificate, but if you'd been born in the UK then your birth certificate would show your first name(s) only (no surname) and your parents' full names. Other countries do things differently - I'm looking now at a Chilean certificate on which the child's full name (almost always double-barrelled, with both father's and mother's surnames) is shown, with sex, DOB and national ID number (generated by the computer as the inscription is keyboarded, i.e. within a few days of the birth), along with the full names of both parents and their ID numbers. You're right - these things can be quite complicated ... or even disturbing!
